Gibson D. Lewis Library’s history of outreach programming began in the 1980s. Community engagement was an early component of the library’s mission with institutional support from its founding school the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. In 1991, Gibson D. Lewis Library was designated as a partner medical library for the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM), an administrative branch for the National Institutes of Health National Library of Medicine.

The Community Engagement Collection for Gibson D. Lewis Library contains free educational resources created for the purpose of improving the health of the community by providing equal access to quality health information.
