Description

Finding aid for The J.A. Majors Company and Majors Scientific, Inc. Collection
John Albert Majors began selling medical books as a way to help him pay for medical school. Upon graduation from the University of Nashville in 1902, he decided he would rather sell medical books than to practice medicine. On January 1, 1909, the first J.A. Majors Company office opened at 1301 Tulane Avenue in New Orleans, Louisiana. Over the years, the company grew to have offices in Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, and California. The company focused on selling books and managing journal subscriptions for libraries all over the country and also maintained bookstores where books, models and other medical student items were sold. Dr. Majors' sons John, Jr. and Bill, along with son-in-law Jack McClendon joined the company after returning from WWII and in 1978, grandsons J.A. Majors III and Al McClendon joined as well. January 2009 marked the 100th Anniversary of J.A. Majors Company. Due to digital popularity and reduced sales the last remaining bookstore was closed in November of 2010.
