Geurt Levi Tilma, Jr., D.O. was born December 13, 1938. He and his brother, Anthony, grew up on a farm in Plainview, Texas. Dr. Tilma earned a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Texas Tech and one in Pharmacy from the University of Texas in Austin. Geurt and Janice Foster were married May 2, 1964. He served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War as a Pharmacist. He attended medical school at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he graduated third in his class in 1976. Janice was active in the Student Wives Association from 1972-1976. She was president 1974-1975. In 1975 she was very active in the effort to make TCOM a state supported school. In 1976-1977 she was an advisor to the Student Wives Association. Janice stated, "I think something that is important to me is that all of the people who started the school, and for whom most of the buildings are named for were dear friends, who did a great job of mentoring the early classes. Also that GL started the classes in the 'Bowling Alley.' Also equally important to me is the fact that I have the very first TCOM sign that was outside of the Stokes(both of them worked there) office. When the school got bigger it was thrown away. I was at a SWA garage sale, next to the dumpster. I saw it and grabbed it." Dr. Tilma completed his internship and residency in Radiology at the Fort Worth Osteopathic Hospital. As a Radiologist, he continued to serve the Air Force on active duty and as a contract physician. He also had a private practice in Manchester, TN. Dr. Tilma and his wife Janice have one son, Mark Levi Tilma. Mark is married to Megan Marie Montgomery. Dr. Tilma passed away August 29, 2013 and is buried at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.
