In 1946, a group of osteopathic physicians and surgeons opened the Fort Worth Osteopathic Hospital in an old mansion at 1402 Summit Avenue. The hospital had 2 beds, an operating room, and a nursery. On February 28, 1950, the Fort Worth Osteopathic Hospital moved to a new location at 3505 Camp Bowie Boulevard. The facility had 25 beds and 5 bassinets. The hospital was approved as an Intern training facility in 1951 and granted a surgical residency in 1956. Also in 1956, the hospital moved to 1000 Montgomery Street. It had 120 beds and 15 bassinets. An expansion in 1968 brought the total beds up to 200. In 1970, the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine began with classes on the fifth floor of the hospital. In 1981, upon completion of a new expansion, the hospital changed its name to Fort Worth Osteopathic Medical Center. The hospital continued to grow and add new services. In 1989, the name changed to Osteopathic Medical Center of Texas and introduced hyperbaric medicine services. The hospital closed October 8, 2004. According the American Osteopathic Association, the medical center was the last accredited hospital in the country to use osteopathic in its name.
