The difficulties of clinical trial recruitment are known, but solutions are not well characterized which leads to recruiting research subjects as a major reason for trial inefficiency. The goal of this practicum project was to survey former and current research patients of Texas Pulmonary & Critical Care Associates, P.A. (TPCCC) to optimize recruitment strategies for the TPCCC Research Center by examining their beliefs and attitudes towards research. The results suggest that patients have a generally positive attitude towards clinical research and join for their improvement and benefitting others. There is a strong agreement that former and current patients would recommend others to participate in research and as far as drawbacks, there was no significant drawback experienced. Internet use was more prevalent in patients over the age of 65 and while interest in using the internet to learn more about clinical research was not overwhelming, contact through the internet by e-mail was desired along with telephone contact. Categorization of the participants’ responses may aid the TPCCC research center in developing strategies to improve recruitment.
