dc.descriptionThe Texas Osteopathic Medical Association was organized on November 29, 1900 in Sherman, Texas under the name Texas Association for the Advancement of Osteopathy. David L. Clark, D.O. was elected the first president. The association formed because of the Wilson Bill, a piece of Texas legislation that would have classed Osteopathic physicians with unorthodox practitioners. In 1907, the first Texas Medical Practice Act was passed and it permitted the licensing of doctors of osteopathy in the state of Texas. In 1901, the name changed to Texas Osteopathic Association and in 1930, the name changed to the Texas Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons. On September 14, 1971, the name changed to Texas Osteopathic Medical Association, which is the current title of the organization. In the 1950's the first state headquarters were established in Fort Worth. The state headquarters are now in Austin. The auxiliary was formed in 1940. dc.description.abstractThe Texas Osteopathic Medicine Association Archives documents the history of the osteopathic profession in Texas from 1930 as the Texas Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons and as the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association from September 14, 1970 until 2003. The collection includes the journals Texas Osteopathic Round-Up from 1938-1944, Texas Osteopathic Physicians from 1944 to 1955, and Texas Osteopathic Physicians Journal from 1955-1976. The collection also contains meeting minutes, accounting records, correspondence, membership directories, and assorted memorabilia from 1938 to 2003. The collection also includes meeting minutes from the Auxiliary to the Texas Association of Osteopathic Physicians from 1940 to 1966 and meeting minutes from the Auxiliary to the Texas Osteopathic Association from 1990 to 2000. Other auxiliary documents and scrapbooks are also included. There are a few papers dated before 1930.
